Round Six - Monaco Grand Prix - 14/02/2010
For the second time in as many years Dizzo’s seemingly unstoppable winning streak has been halted by f15active in an exciting battle at the Grand Prix of Monaco. Unlike last season’s showdown however Super Aguri driver CrystaLM was one of the main protagonists, and his ever improving form would help establish the outcome of this race.
Dizzo remained the dominant driver in qualifying, capturing pole position from Crystal and f15 after completing several laps. It was quite a tight session with the top 5 drivers covered by only a few tenths.
Despite its importance at Monaco, qualifying up the front could not stop Crystal from muscling his way past Dizzo on the opening lap. Though he snatched the lead, Crystal found it difficult to bring his tyres up to temperature, which saw him run wide at Sainte Devote. Dizzo decided not to retake the lead due to cutting the track but in the process of slowing down allowed f15 through to 2nd place on the run up to Massenet. F15 then seized the lead when Crystal repeated the mistake a few laps later.
These opening laps effectively decided the outcome of the race, as f15 was able to build enough of a cushion prior to the stops to maintain his lead. Crystal drove valiantly to close the gap but spun late in the race, allowing Dizzo to close in. Dizzo however was unable to capitalise due to unexpectedly high rear tyre wear and had to settle for third behind the Super Aguri driver.
JesterF1 was next to finish, taking a trio of fourth placed finishes this year. The Williams driver made a poor start dropping a position to andrewF1. The pair battled until lap 7 with Zvook close behind when Jester dived up the inside at Mirabeau, taking fifth place which then became fourth after Sawtoe made a mistake at Portier. Sawtoe was the final driver to finish on the lead lap and was placed fifth. Despite losing a front wing in his accident and having to take avoiding action coming out of the pits due to another incident, he was able to take advantage of the retirement of ZvooK.
AndrewF1 was the next to bring his car home, albeit quite badly bent. The Red Bull driver made 3 pit stops during the Monaco Grand Prix due to various incidents. With very little practice Andrew made the call to switch from a 1 stop to a 2 stop strategy, which then became a 3 stop when he crashed in sympathy with Borgy at Tabac. Despite some damage to his steering he carried on and even managed to pass Webby for sixth place with 9 laps to go, which is where he remained to the flag.
Dev Series regular Webby proved that points were possible at Monaco by driving a consistent, error-free race to take seventh despite a few hairy moments at the start and while battling whiteshadow. Whiteshadow too had to battle hard for his solitary point after taking a hit or two from Borgy on the opening lap, which sent him back down to twelfth and left him with a lot of work to do to take eighth.
With the Grand Prix of Monaco complete the teams will now fly across the Atlantic for a single flyaway race at Montreal. Dizzo should be keen as ever to re-stamp his authority on the Championship with a dominant win but while the Ferrari driver does have a great streak of Canadian Grand Prix victories, he has never looked totally comfortable in his beating down of the opposition at this unique low-downforce circuit. Crystal too could pose quite a threat with his relentless effort and the dramatic rethink of car setup required to attack the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Both these factors make a back-to-back win for f15 unlikely, but possible none the less. It should make for an exciting clash at Round 7 of the F1A Championship Series!
